My dog has diarrhea but is acting fine, why?

Our team is formed for veterinarians, ethologists, and animal health content experts.

Like humans, many dogs suffer from diarrhea at least once in their lives. Don´t use a home remedy if he is vomiting too or if it´s a diarrhea with bloodb

In most cases, diarrhea in dogs is not serious and is cured without the intervention of the veterinarian. Even so, the problem is not pleasant; neither for the dog nor for his owners. This ailment is more common in older dogs and puppies.

My dog has diarrhea and has been vomiting for 3 days

Sometimes it can be associated with vomiting, which makes its resolution more difficult and the symptoms and treatment get complicated. If this is the case, there is no way for curing a dog diarrhea fast.

Most intestinal dysfunctions are caused by irritation of the intestine's walls. This irritation causes greater segregation of fluids, which in turn make the stools change in consistency and color (pasty, liquid, and light brown).

Main causes of diarrhea in dogs

  • Virus: parvovirus, distemper or calicivirus. They attack with more aggressiveness very young or very old animals.

  • Bacteria: salmonella, yersinia, clostridium ... Normally related to the intake of food in poor condition.

  • Parasites: giardia, coccidia, nematodes...

  • Allergies.

  • Intolerances.

  • Reactions to drugs or poisonings.

  • By the use of antibiotics: when attacking the bacteria of the intestinal flora, the natural balance of it can be broken, which favors the growth of harmful bacteria.

  • Autoimmune problems.

  • Digestive problems.

  • Intake of non-edible materials.

If your dog has diarrhea, you should keep an eye on the house and see if he may have ingested some toxic substance. In the case of puppies, who bite everything, it can be from medicine that we have left in his reach, or any homemade contraption that he may have bitten. If you suspect that this has happened, or the color of the stools is reddish (with traces of blood), you should immediately go to the veterinarian.

Another possibility in case of diarrhea in dogs is that they have eaten garbage or food in poor condition without realizing it.

My dog has diarrhea with blood

When the dog has diarrhea, the first thing we have to do in any case is to make sure he drinks a lot of water. The main danger is that our little friend gets dehydrated, so we have to be aware that the intake of water is abundant.

The animal should be fasting for at least 12 hours. He should not eat anything while he has diarrhea and only drink water for, at least, 12 hours so that the irritation of the intestine disappears and is the animal is clean of feces. If he continues with diarrhea even after fasting, you should consult the veterinarian, since the origin of the disease could be viral or bacterial and he will need medication.

How to cure a diarrhea as fast as possible

If diarrhea has disappeared after the 12-hour fast, you can start giving him a soft diet for the next 2 days. The soft diet consists of boiled chicken (boneless and shredded) mixed with boiled rice, without any spices (not even salt). The doses should be small and divided into three or four times a day.

This diet helps regulate and dry the excess of water in the animal's intestine. In fact, it is possible that the next 2 days he might be a little constipated by the rebound effect. It is not necessary to be alarmed, since it is the normal thing in these cases. Even so, we must be aware of his defecations.

After 2 days we will return to the normal diet. It is very important that you do not prolong this soft diet more than indicated, since it lacks many essential nutrients for your dog.

If your dog refuses the feed after the treatment (rice with chicken is something they love), mix it with a little bit of boiled rice so that it smells good and start taking away the rice little by little, until he gets just the feed.

Tips to prevent diarrhea in dogs

Do not forget to:

  • Have the vaccines up to date, one of the symptoms of parvovirus is diarrhea.

  • Make sure your dog is properly dewormed.

  • Never self-medicate your pet, you may be ignoring the true cause, giving him the wrong medication, or in an excessive or insufficient way. It is very important not to give them anything to cut diarrhea without having a diagnosis before, as it is often a mechanism to expel viruses or bacteria.

Choose a feed of good quality and suitable for the age, breed, and physical conditions of your pet, remember that not always the most expensive is the best. Ask a veterinarian for advice.
