How to stop a dog from peeing in the house when left home? One of the most worrying behaviors to leave our dog alone is that he urinates at home. While some furry ones get accustomed from the beginning, they are more independent than others and do not cause us problems; others have a harder time accepting it, peeing and even pooping inside the house, but why does he do it?

The causes can be very diverse, being fundamental to detect which one is happening and to apply the appropriate guidelines, because only then it will be possible for him to stop peeing at home.

If this behavior is repeated over and over again, we recommend that you contact our ethologist so that he can evaluate the problem and identify the real reason. An ethologist is a canine behavior specialist and will know how to get him to stop doing so.

How to keep dog from peeing when I leave

To help you understand the different causes of why our furry can urinate at home when he is left alone, which will also help us rule out future diseases, we will collect the most common reasons:

Although it is more frequent in puppies, some adult dogs may also not have learned to hold urine long enough. The puppies, during their first months of life, are not able to voluntarily control their sphincters, and if they remain many hours alone at home, it is very likely that, upon arrival, we will find a puddle of wee-wee.

Therefore, it is important to teach them to do their needs in a certain area (for example, newspaper or cardboard), so that while they learn to do it in the street and they acquire complete control over the sphincters, they will urinate in the area designated to it and not in any part of the house.

Your dog may urinate at home because he has acquired an incorrect habit

It is common in adult dogs, especially if they have lived much of their lives confined in a place without access to the outside. Between 2 and 4 months, the puppy acquires preferences when choosing places and determined substrates where to make his needs. That is why it is so important to teach them from the beginning where they can do them and where they cannot.

The dogs that remain in a place without being able to access the outside, do their needs where they can, without being able to choose another more suitable area. Generally, this problem is more complicated to solve than the previous case, since there is bad learning and therefore the prognosis is worse.

How to stop dog anxiety pooping and peeing

We have spoken in detail in other articles about this problem. This is one of the most common symptoms that the dog pees and/or poops at home when we are not there. In these cases, we have to treat the problem of anxiety as a whole, since it is the reason why our furry makes his needs at home when he is alone.

Many puppies and young dogs wet themselves in a situation of excitement. For example, our arrival at home can be one of those situations that cause the dog to urinate. That is why we will find the wee-wee only in the entrance, and not in other areas of the house. Generally, this usually disappears when the dog reaches adulthood.

Fear is one of the strongest emotions. The dog perceives a threat that can endanger his integrity and pee.

When he is left alone, he can perceive some stimulus that frightens him (for example, a loud noise outside, something from a house that falls down making a great noise,...) and therefore he pees. Generally, he will also pee while we are in front of him if the stimulus that scares him appears. In these cases, it is very important to identify what is scary for him and start a process of habituation and desensitization treatment to that stimulus.

Older dogs may suffer from cognitive dysfunction syndrome

It is a disorder that affects older dogs. It can have several manifestations, among them, the loss of learning, among which hygienic habits are found. In addition, older dogs can also lose voluntary control over their sphincters, which makes them urinate at home even though they did not before. Generally, this problem will occur when they are both alone at home and accompanied. Wetting himself at home can also be a symptom of a medical problem

No less important are the medical causes. If our furry has a problem, especially in the urinary tract, we can find traces of urine at home. As in the case of fear, our dog will also pee at home while we are there with him. It will be essential to go to the veterinarian for a complete review in order to diagnose the problem and start the corresponding medical treatment.

As you can see, there are many possible causes that may be behind our dog urinating when we leave him alone at home. Some of them, like the lack of learning, are normal and transitory until the dog learns that he should do it in the street. But other causes require a more complex treatment, either medical or behavioral. Therefore, it is essential to identify what the reason is, since without having the cause clear, we will not be able to apply the appropriate and specific guidelines to solve the problem. If your dog urinates at home when you leave him alone, do not hesitate to contact an ethologist to establish the diagnosis and propose the best treatment.
